On Sept. 17, the Great Neck Road Runners showed desire, guts, and determination in their second game of the season, as they took to the field, unfortunately losing by one goal in a 2-1 game. The first half of the game was played with tremendous willpower as both teams tried to overcome the heat. With no points on the board and only two minutes left in the first half, the opponent HBC scored, taking the lead. Approaching the second half of the game with full force, the Road Runners tied the game with a clutch penalty kick by Eric Weinstein, which was set up by a penalty on Edmond Sassoon. As the game continued, the defense and midfield controlled much of the play. Disappointed but no less confident and hopeful for the next game, the Road Runners lost on a free kick that sailed over the goal keeper, Daniel Belmont's outstretched arms.
There were plenty of alert defensive performances by Angad Ishar, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, Jordan Friedman, and Eric Weinstein, who suffocated HBC's forwards, particularly in the second half from getting too close to the net. Additionally, there was gritty and committed mid field play from start to finish by players: Andrew Brash, AJ Hendler, and Matt Mueller and strong and energetic plays up front by Andrew Nikolai and Matias Quarlerli. Overall, it was a beautiful sunny day at the Soccer Park fields in Plainview; The Road Runners look forward to game 3 of their exciting season at Great Neck North High School on Oct. 1 at 12:30 p.m.
