Joseph Schachter, 40-year resident of Great Neck, died peacefully on July 27, 2006. He was 75. He was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn, and the City College of NY, Class 51B (Business).
A certified public accountant, he was the founding partner of Joseph Schachter & Co. of Great Neck and was long active in the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants. He served honorably in the US Infantry, in action in Korea, and received a Medal for Valor.
Joe Schachter was very active in Temple Israel of Great Neck, serving as vice president and chairman of several committees and Men's Club president. He will be remembered for his rich baritone voice, conducting Men's Club services and as volunteer cantor and founding member of Temple Beth Am, Aberdeen, NJ.
In addition to his volunteer work, he enjoyed several hobbies - model trains, building balsa wood airplanes and doll houses and performing magic tricks for his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Helene, whom he met at City College. In May they celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Also survived by three daughters, Barbara (Rob) Wallner, Madeline Schachter (David Stagliano) and Amy (Brian) Hyland; six grandchildren; brother Myron; nieces and nephews.
Jules W. Santagata Jr., Esq., a 15-year member of the Vigilant Engine Hook & Ladder Company, passed away on Aug. 4, 2006. Jules was a member of the fire police of the company. He was a civil engineer and an attorney. Jules is survived by his mother Mary and numerous cousins.
