Max Streisand, longtime resident of Great Neck, died on May 14, 2006, in Albany. He was 91. Beloved husband of Gloria, father of six, grandfather of 17 and great-grandfather of eight, he was most known for his devotion to his family.
He spent his final months at the Daughters of Sarah Nursing Center in Albany, NY.
During a speech he delivered as part of a celebration for his 90th birthday in July 2005, he stressed the importance of family ties over all other endeavors in life. His message to his children and grandchildren in attendance was to keep in touch. "Even a phone call will do," he said.
He was born in New York City on April 25, 1915. During his high school years, he was an avid runner, participating in competitions and winning medals. He attended St. John's University as a night student, graduating with a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1939. He received a master's degree from the School of Education at New York University in 1959.
Elevated to the rank of associate professor in 1961, he taught in the marketing department of the New York City College of Technology, formerly the New York City Community College. He taught at the college for 27 years, retiring in 1980.
While a resident of Great Neck, he was president of the Square Club and the Great Neck Figure Skating Club.
After retiring from his post at the college, he and his wife Gloria moved to Lauderhill, FL, where he was very active in city government and the Democratic Party. He was a long-standing member of the Broward County Democratic Executive Committee. He served as president of the Lauderhill United Democratic Club, and he was vice president of the Margate Democratic Club and served on the board of directors. He was president of the Council of Democratic Club Presidents and served on the Florida State Board of Nursing under the administration of Governor Lawton Chiles. He also served on the Planning and Zoning Board in the City of Lauderhill in the late 1980s.
In recent years, he and Gloria spent their summers in Albany. During the last months of his life, he spoke often of his house and the memories on Darley Road in Russell Gardens. These memories of the house included many family gatherings of life-cycle celebrations, but also ordinary weekday dinners, which were always an event with six children. Laughter and stories were part of his daily routine, showing his children that a sense of humor is critical to keep one afloat.
He leaves his wife of 44 years, Gloria Streisand of Albany; son Robert Streisand of Chappaqua, NY; daughter Karen Shapiro of Fairfax, VA; daughter Nina Sher of Delmar, NY; son James Streisand of Sudbury, MA; son Scott Streisand of Melville, NY; daughter Jennifer Streisand of West Lafayette, IN, in addition to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
