Officials from the Skyline Conference unveiled the 2006 Lacrosse All-Knickerbocker League Team, which features four USMMA Mariners and head coach Tom Gill. To no surprise, one of the nation's most prolific scorers in Ellicott City, Maryland native Sean Dougherty earned first-team honors for his performance over the course of the 2006 campaign. Dougherty notched a single-season career high for goals (61), assists (16) and points (77). He led the nation in scoring for the majority of the season, including being ranked first on a weekly basis in the Knickerbocker League in points and goals per game.
Dougherty recorded five game-winning goals over the course of the season, with the most dramatic coming in the final minutes of a come-from-behind win over Union College (12-11) on March 29.
He met several other career marks, including a string of 13 straight games where he scored three goals or more. Dougherty notched a season-high seven points four times on the year and eclipsed the century mark in both goals and points. He scored a single-game career best seven goals versus Maritime College and broke the single-season record for goals (58), previous held by Rocky Curtis in 1999.
The All-American candidate currently sits tied for fourth with Clancy Cornwall ('92-'96) on the all-time scoring list with 136 career goals.
Freshman defenseman Michael Condron and junior goalie John Pagano also both earned First-Team honors. Condron, also an Ellicott City native, was instrumental along with his teammates in providing a last line of defense in front of Pagano. Condron is credited with 58 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers on the year.
The adage "a team only goes as far as its goalie" proved to hold true for the Lacrosse Mariners with Pagano in net. The junior totaled 185 saves on the season and concluded the year with a 12-5 record. For the majority of the campaign, the West Islip, native ranked first in the conference in both save percentage and goals allowed per game. His finest performance came in a losing effort at Colorado College with a season-best 21 saves. Other solid efforts came on the road in the conference opener at Montclair State (20 saves) and two weeks ago at Farmingdale State (18 saves).
Senior midfielder Brendan Myers earned Honorable Mention recognition. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native totaled 20 points on seven goals and 13 assists. His finest performance of the year came in USMMA final two victories. Myers etched four points on two points and two assists in the regular season home finale versus Maritime College and one goal and three assists in the semi-final versus Richard Stockton.
Junior attack Jim Flannery also was named to the Honorable Mention team. The North Massapequa native was second on the team in points (63) with a single-season career in that category along with goals (40), assists (23) and ground balls (37). Flannery was once named Knickerbocker League Player of the Week and twice named to the weekly honor roll. He scored three goals or more eight times on the year. His best single game performance came in the semi-final game versus Richard Stockton with five goals.
USMMA set three team records under the tutelage of 16th year Head Coach Tom Gill, who was named 2006 Coach of the Year. Under Gill's guidance, USMMA broke the program record for wins in a season with 12. The Mariners also put forth one of the best offensive productions in history breaking the single-season record for points (334) and goals (203).
The Mariners were one of the most improved teams in the conference, by winning seven more games than the season prior. USMMA earned the second-seed in the Knickerbocker League Tournament with a 7-1 record and advanced to the finals with a 16-4 win over Richard Stockton College.
The honor marks the second time in Gill's illustrious career that he earned Coach of the Year honors. Gill was named the Hudson Valley Coach of the Year in 1993. With a 12-5 mark, Gill improved his overall mark to 159-145 lifetime and 114-112 at the Academy.
