The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has announced that Matt Bernstein, a fullback from the University of Wisconsin, and Shay Doron, a guard on the University of Maryland women's basketball team originally from Great Neck, have been selected for the 2006 "Marty Glickman Outstanding Jewish Scholastic Athlete of the Year" award. They will be honored along with nine athletes, sportsmen and sportswomen from a variety of fields at the 14th annual National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Sunday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. at the Suffolk Y Jewish Community Center at 74 Hauppauge Rd. in Commack. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door. Seniors and children under 12 are free.
"These two young athletes are an inspiration to all young Jewish children and living examples that Jews can succeed in anything they want, including sports," explained Alan Freedman, director of the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. "We congratulate them and wish them continued success in their lives and careers."
Bernstein began his football career as a four-year starter at Edgemont High School in Scarsdale, NY where he was a two-time state player of the year, and in his last two years of high school, he ran for a combined 3,887 yards. In 2001, after high school, Matt enrolled in the University of Wisconsin. By 2002 he was in the starting line-up. Bernstein, at 6'2", 273 pounds, is considered one of the best fullbacks in the Big Ten. Primarily a blocking fullback, Bernstein carried the ball 138 times for 508 yards and scored five touchdowns, and caught 22 passes for 181 yards in his career.
Doron has a plethora of titles and achievements even before her stardom at the University of Maryland. At Christ the King High School, she averaged 17.2 points, 4.2 assists, 4 rebounds and 6 steals per game. Included in her array of titles are: Gatorade Player of the Year, Street and Smith's All-American, Battle of the Borough's MVP, and McDonalds All-American. Shay's success did not stop there. In 2003, she enrolled in the University of Maryland where she is majoring in Criminal Justice. In 2005 she guided the under 20 Israeli National Team to the Division B European Championship and participated in the 2005 Maccabiah Games, where she led the USA to a 5-0 record and a gold medal. The 5'9" guard, became Maryland's First Team All-ACC since 1994. She owns the sophomore class record for points per game (17.6) and total points (562). Currently she has the fourth-best career scoring average in the school history.
"The Marty Glickman Outstanding Jewish Scholastic Athlete of the Year" award honors academic and athletic excellence. The award goes to Jewish college students who show a well-adjusted balance between supreme athletic ability, notable achievements, contribution to the community and a good academic standing.
The 2006 Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductees include: Herb Brown (basketball coach), Bob Berland (Judo), Neal Walk (basketball), Carrie Sheinberg (skier), Donna Orender (president of the WNBA), Ilana Kloss (doubles tennis), Roger Kahn (sports writer), John Frank (football), Jeff Agoos (soccer).
