In just three weeks, the Dougherty brothers have become quite a tandem and synonymous with scoring en route to leading the United States Merchant Marine Academy Lacrosse Mariners to a 4-2 start. For their efforts, both Sean and Brennan claimed Player and Rookie of the Week honors, respectively.
Sean Dougherty, with the help of his teammates, has torched the net thus far. The junior attack leads both the team and conference with 23 goals and goals per game average (3.83).
With the addition of seven assists, the Ellicot City, Maryland native also leads the Knickerbocker League in points (30). The elder has been nothing but splendid from the offensive sense in six games played. Sean's finest performance came in five goal efforts in consecutive affairs in a 15-6 win at Scranton and a 9-1 win versus Vassar. He has notched seven points twice on the season; first in the season opening win versus Mount St. Vincent (4 goals and 3 assists) and again at Scranton (5 goals and 2 assists).
Already eclipsing the 100-point mark for his career after the second game of the season, Doughtery has the opportunity to reach the 100-goal pinnacle this weekend with 98 career goals to his credit.
Brennan Dougherty has shown versatility with a balanced 12 goals and 12 assists in the early going. He ranks first on the team and second in the conference in assists. The rookie is fifth in the league in points per game (4.0) and tenth in goals per game (2.0).
The freshman showcased his abilities at the outset with a four goal, two assists performance in aiding the Mariners to a season-opener record 22 goals in a rout of Mount St. Vincent. His other four-goal performance came in the win over Scranton. The rookie notched a season high six points in both of those contests. Brennan has tallied a point in each of the six contests played thus far. He was held without a goal for the first time on Saturday, March 11 at Colorado College.
Other Mariners who rank among statistical leaders in the Knickerbocker League include Jim Flannery and John Pagano.
Junior Jim Flannery, who ranks third on the squad with a total of 22 points coming from a balanced 11 goals and 11 assists, is sixth in points per outing (3.67) and fourth in assists per game (1.83). Junior goalie John Pagano ranks first in save percentage (.677), second in goals against average (6.39) and third in saves per game (10.83).
As a unit, USMMA ranks second in scoring offense (11.67) and third in scoring defense (6.34). Kings Point will look to put an end to its recent two-game skid on Saturday, Mar. 18 at Captain Tomb Field versus Williams College.
