March 26, 2006 marks the seventh annual Julia's Run for Children, a 4 mile memorial race in New Haven, Connecticut. This race is in memory of my friend Julia Rusinek, a beautiful, warm and inspirational young woman, who died suddenly during the summer of 1999 before her senior year at Yale.
Young and old gather in her memory for what has become a road race for those who not only knew and loved Julia, but for those who want to know and cherish her life. I look forward to the race each year as it is a time for Julia's old teammates, coaches, family and friends to gather and rejoice in Julia's memory.
Julia, a tremendous athlete, friend and compassionate individual, was a constant encourager and supporter of her friends and family. As we gather each year and partake in such a significant road race it is Julia who makes this race so meaningful. Sharing in her life and seeing my old track teammates from Great Neck North High School is a constant reminder of what made Julia so special. She was a connecting force whose passion for life and running made so many individuals believe in themselves.
Julia was a true optimist. In our younger track days (1992-96), it was Julia who was the constant supporter of her teammates. I remember many occasions when she pushed me to cross the finish line when I felt I couldn't go any further. She was the best cheering section a teammate could ever have. Her loud and enthusiastic cheers would often be the only voice I would hear in the crowd.
One of my fondest memories was one of our very last track meets in high school. On a rainy spring day, Julia gathered some mud and smeared it on all her teammates' faces as a symbol of team spirit and unity. This memory has continued to stay with me and by partaking in this race each year it is my chance to smear the mud back onto her.
She was an amazing inspiration and it is with memories like these, that we celebrate Julia through the sport she loved so passionately.
The Run will take place on Sunday, March 26 at 9:30 a.m. at Yale University. For more information about volunteering or running visit www.juliarun.org or e-mail juliarun@westnet.com.
