Frieda Schoener) Meltzer passed away peacefully on Feb. 21, 2006 in Great Neck, at the age of 103. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Samuel Meltzer, who died in 1983. Frieda Meltzer was the loving mother of Joel Meltzer, Henry Meltzer and Susan (Meltzer) Bagnini; mother-in-law of Gloria Zotti-Meltzer and Rosemary Kent and Carl Bagnini; grandmother of Michael Meltzer, Amy Starr, Jenna Bagnini, Karen Bagnini, Robert Meltzer and Jonathan Meltzer and great grandmother of Adam Starr, Connor Hufnagel and Basie Bagnini- Nagel.
Born in Ostrowa, Poland and raised in New York City, Frieda married Samuel Meltzer in 1925 and they moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1926 where Sam established an export business. They returned to the United States in 1929 and stayed until 1935 when Sam started a new export business in Santiago, Chile and moved his family there. They lived in Chile until 1949 when the family moved back to the United States and settled in Great Neck, NY. Frieda was the executive secretary of Temple Judea of Manhasset, NY from 1962 until her retirement in 1977.
Classy, unpretentious and optimistic, Frieda lived a full, adventurous life with a keen interest in the arts, education, travel, politics and feminism. Upon retirement, Frieda became active in many organizations such as the Reformed Democrats of Great Neck, the Gray Panthers, REAP, and Women-space.
Funeral and internment were private.
Frieda Meltzer's memory can be honored by donations to the Evans Medical Foundation for the New England Centenarian Study, Boston University School of Medicine, Boston Medical Center 88 East Newton St., Robinson 2, Boston, MA 02118-2393.
