As six Great Neck villages (Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rock and Thomaston) prepare for uncontested elections next Tuesday, March 21, Great Neck Plaza Mayor Jean A. Celender held a big re-election kick-off party at Daruma Japanese restaurant. Mayor Celender is running for her fourth term as mayor.
Old Village Looks at Work Force Housing
The Village of Great Neck began a dialogue with local builder Frank Lalezarian to consider the concept of an emergency work force housing project on a piece of undeveloped land behind Old Mill Road, bordering on Great Neck Estates. One large building would be apartments rented by Mr. Lalezarian and the other, smaller building, would be owned by a separate entity that would rent apartments to local first responders (Alerts and Vigilants). Although the mayor and members of the board of trustees appeared receptive, many Old Village and Estates residents questioned the density, the traffic and the prospect of rezoning a single-family district to a multiple-family dwelling zoning district.

March 26, 2006 marks the seventh annual Julia's Run for Children, a 4 mile memorial race in New Haven, Connecticut. This race is in memory of my friend Julia Rusinek, a beautiful, warm and inspirational young woman, who died suddenly during the summer of 1999 before her senior year at Yale.
UCF Annual 5K Run April 2
The United Community Fund of Great Neck and North New Hyde Park will hold its annual 5K Run on Sunday, April 2. This year is the 28th time that the organization will have its run. Traditionally, the event is held in late fall; however, Spring is an ideal time so that runners will not have to worry about the elements. Also, runners will be pleased to note that the run is at 10 a.m. at Great Neck South High School, Exit 33 of the LIE/Lakeville Road. The run will take place on the contained campus of the high school. You can register online at www.active.com or call 482-8101 and ask for an application. T-shirts will be given to all competitors and trophies will be awarded for overall and age group categories. Event hotline is 482-8101.
