U.S. Merchant Marine Academy guard Kristen Hetsko was named Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year and Second Team All-Skyline. Hetsko, a freshman from Killingworth, CT (Haddamn-Killingworth), was named Skyline Rookie of the Week on five occasions this season. At the end of regular season play, Hetsko led the conference in three-pointers made with 66.
Within the conference, she finished in the top ten in four other categories. She ranked sixth overall in scoring with 13.3 points per game, fourth in three-point field goal percentage with 35.1 percent, ninth in free throw percentage with 73.1 percent and tenth in assists with an average of 3.21 assists per game.
"We are very proud of Kristen, and congratulate her on her accomplishment," said head coach Mike Murray. "It is great to see that Kristen's hard work and talent were noticed by all the coaches around the league. Kristen should be very proud of this accomplishment and so should her teammates, because without them, Kristen would not have won this award."
This season Hetsko also broke Academy records in three-point field goals made and three-point field goals attempted. Finishing up the season with a 198 three-pointers attempted, Hetsko dethroned Rebecca Segert's record of 124 in 2002-2003. She also broke teammate Ashley Carlisle's two-year old record of 53 three-pointers made in a season with 67.
Hetsko led the Mariners in seven categories. On offense, she attempted an average of 12.4 field goals a game, and made an average of 4.1. Her record breaking three-pointer statistics also put her ahead of the rest of the Mariners. Hetsko also averaged 13.3 points per game, with a total of 324 points this season, putting her on the program's season scoring leader board, led by Segert's 623 points in 2000-2001. She also leads the team in assists with 3.1 per game (78 total) and minutes played, 34.6 per game.
For the season, Hetsko led the Mariners in scoring on eight different occasions (19 points vs. CCNY, W 94-29; 17 points vs. Medgar Evers, W 76-52, Stevens Tech, L 69-53; 18 points vs. NYU, L 6-43, Rutgers-Newark, L 67-57, Baruch L 59-57; 16 points vs. Mount Saint Vincent, W 66-48; 15 points vs. Saint Joseph's Long Island, W 72-59).
Mariners finished the regular season in fourth place with a record of 15-9, 7-4 Skyline. The Mariners ended their season in the Skyline Tournament quarterfinals against Old Westbury, 55-39.
With a win against the Manhattanville Valiants on Feb. 11, the Mariners tied their all-time season win record.
Two days earlier, the Blue and Gray defeated service Academy rival Coast Guard, 78-56 for the first time in the programs six-year history.
