The talented South High School varsity basketball team, capping off their outstanding season of 17 wins and 4 losses, reached the semifinals of the Nassau County Class A Basketball Tournament. On Friday, Feb. 24, before an audience of 300, they played against the top-seeded Westbury Dragons at SUNY Westbury. After a hard fought game, and without their usual starter, senior Alex Sokolow, who was sidelined with a stress fracture, the Rebels lost to Westbury by a score of 59 to 44. Previously, in the quarterfinals, the Rebels were successful in beating Manhassett 63-60 to reach the semifinals. In the first round of the playoffs, the Rebels beat the Great Neck North Blazers 53-30. Congratulations are extended to the whole Rebel team, including Coach Steven Liebertz, assistant coaches Marty Harrison and Ciro Ambrosio, players Ben Belmont, Andrew Gordon, Geoff Gouterman, Michael Greene, Jake Kent, Zach Klinger, Adam Krausner, Ori Kravel, Gregory Kronberg, Seth Levine, Anthony Lewis, Jamel Rahiem, Alex Sokolow, and Victor Wang. They had a truly remarkable run in which they displayed terrific team work, and wonderful athleticism.
