Led by Ashley Carlisle's team high of 24 points, the Kings Point Mariners defeated arch-rival United States Coast Guard Academy, 78-56, for the first time in the history of the Mariners' six-year program.

"I told the team you have the opportunity to make history tonight, go out and take it, and they did," remarked head coach Mike Murray.

With this Feb. 9 win over Coast Guard, the Mariners advance to 4-5 in the race for the Superintendent's Trophy, with wins in men's soccer, football and sailing this season.

The Mariners jumped right into the game starting off with an 11-2 run over the Bears. Sophomore Morgan Gartner led the run with six points.

With 9:36 left in the first half, a 3-pointer by Carlisle put the Mariners up by 18, the largest lead of the period.

Freshman Kristen Hetsko matched the lead with 2:31, putting in a lay up passed in by Carlisle. At the close of the first period, the Mariners led the Bears 35-21.

With 5:06 left on the clock, Carlisle gave the Mariners their largest lead of the game with a lay up passed from junior Marisa Olson, advancing the score 71-41.

Fan favorite, Deborah Westendorf put down two free throws in the final two minutes of play to finish off scoring for the Mariners at 78.

"This was a great team win, they did a great job on the defensive end and executing on the offensive end," said Murray. "Our goal was to contest every three-pointer and I think we did a great job on that."

The Mariners scored 27 field goals off 20 assists and held the Bears to shooting just 6-for-28 from behind the three-point arc. Carlisle led Kings Point with 24 points, seven rebounds and one assist. Hetsko followed with 18 points, one rebound and two assists, and May Marie Hayes closed out the double-digit scoring players with 11 points, two rebounds and one assist. Junior Marisa Olson led the team in assists and rebounds with four and six respectively.

With the win, the Blue and Gray advance their overall record to 14-8 (6-3 Skyline).
