Haz-Mat Investigation Snarls Traffic
Last Tuesday, a suspicious object was spotted in the form of a red canister on the sidewalk at 1 South Middle Neck Road around 4 p.m. just in time for rush hour. Nassau County's Emergency Service team was called. Police cordoned off access to that section of Middle Neck Road just south of the railroad station and evacuated stores within the area.

Thirty Percent Cut in Title I Funds
The Great Neck Public Schools will suffer a $150,000 cut in federal government Title I funds. Board of Education Vice President Judi Bosworth reported this 30 percent cut at the board's June 6 meeting. She emphasized that, since Title I funding is for the needy students, these already "at-risk" students are the ones who will really suffer.

Cleats On a Roll
Storming into the final week of the season, the Great Neck Cleats (Girls U-13) completed a pair of shutouts, beating previously undefeated Elwood (1-0) and Elmont (2-0). As time wore down in an extremely tight match Friday evening, Emily Rothkrug "bent" a direct kick from 20 yards out with eight minutes left for the game's only goal. The Cleats rebounded in 90-degree heat Sunday morning to outlast Elmont. After a scoreless first half, Emily Rothkrug and Hayley Permut netted goals for the victory. The two wins moved the Cleats into third place in their division, with a record of 6-3-0 and one game remaining.
