Sophomore Kaitlin Mulgrew scored a game-high 11 points, and nearly recorded a double-double as she collected eight steals, to lead the US Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team to a 46-35 Skyline Conference win over St. Joseph's L.I. (4-10, 1-3 Skyline). The win evened the Mariners record at 7-7 on the season and 3-3 in Skyline Conference contests.
The Blue and Gray held a slim 24-23 lead at halftime as Mulgrew and fellow sophomore Marisa Olson netted five points each by the break. USMMA gradually opened up their lead in the second half as they established an 11-point edge with 7:18 remaining in the game.
Sophomore Ashley Carlisle scored eight points with eight rebounds in the game, while Olson finished with seven points and four rebounds. Classmate Beth Bogart netted seven points with nine boards off the bench.
Kelly Murphy led the Golden Eagles with a team-high 10 points to go with five rebounds. Katie Dornemann, the teams leading scorer and rebounder on the season, fouled out with 9:03 remaining in the contest. She scored six points with eight boards before fouling out.
The Mariners out rebounded St. Joseph's 40-33 in the game and outscored the Golden Eagles 17-8 off turnovers.
