David T.Y. Chen died peacefully at home on Nov. 27, 2004. He was 84. Born in Shanghai, China, he was a longtime resident of Great Neck. He received his BA at Chien Tung University, Shanghai, and his MBA at Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania in 1951. He specialized in transportation management. After he became a US citizen, he established his own shipping business United Transport Co., NYC, and Transocean Navigation Inc., NYC; of both was owner and president. He owned a fleet of cargo ships transporting cargo from port to port around the world. The following were the names of the vessels: S.S. Angelina, S.S. Evelyn, S.S. Union Evelyn, S.S. United Faith and S.S. Endeavor. He is survived by his wife Evelyn H. Chen; sons, Stephen and Timothy and daughter Esther. Howard Earl Cleave, 85, a resident of Bennington, VT and Annapolis, MD, died of cancer in Annapolis on Dec. 4, 2004. Born on Feb. 19, 1919, Dr. Cleave graduated from Mansfield College and received a Ph.D from Columbia University, teaching music for many years in Great Neck. He owned Camp Champlain in Westport, NY. He was also a member of the Navy band and served in WWII, a plankholder on the USS FDR. Surviving are his daughters, Gertrude Carter of Bennington, Mary Cleave of Annapolis and Bobbie Cleave of Logan, UT; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was married for over 50 years to the late Barbara Cleave of Williamstown, MA. Services private. Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, can be made to Hospice of Chesapeake, 445 Defense Hwy., Annapolis, MD 21401. Arrangements were made by Adams Funeral & Cremation Care, Annapolis.
