Quick Thinking Boy Saves Friend in Boating Accident
Nine-year old Desmond Scanlan has grown up on Hewlett Lane with Steppingstone Park and Long Island Sound as his backyard, so it is not too surprising that he loves water sports and is on friendly terms with the Great Neck Park District staff. Recently his buddy Dave Penchina who operates the dock launch was repositioning the sailing school's small launch and Desmond accompanied him for the short ride. Dave was having some trouble starting the outboard motor and in the process of attempting to adjust it caught his hand in the mechanism. He called to Desmond, "Hey dude, I'm stuck." At first he had no feeling in his hand, but when he was finally able to extricate his hand, both Dave and Desmond were shocked to see how mangled his finger was, described by Desmond as, "all bloody with the bone sticking out." Dave went into shock and lost consciousness falling head first into the water with his legs still in the small boat. Both Dave and Desmond were wearing their life jackets.
