Lillian "Chet" Kaplan, age 93, passed away peacefully in Tampa, Florida with her son's David and Peter at her side, on January 24, 2004. She was the widow of William Kaplan, M.D., one of the original Great Neck general practitioners. She was the mother of three sons, Alan (of Rockville, Maryland) married to Nancy (nee Arons, formerly of Great Neck), Peter (of Hockessin, Delaware) married to Sharon Rosenbush and David (of St. Petersburg, Florida). She was the proud grandmother to nine grandchildren and great-grandmother to eight grandchildren.
Lillian had a Bachelor of Science degree from Washington Square College of NYU. As an artist she trained, at among others, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Willimantic State Teachers College and the Crafts Student League. She exhibited at the Lever House, Grace Building Gallery, NYU, C.W. Post College, The Firehouse Gallery at Nassau Community College, Emily Lowe Gallery at Hofstra University and many other libraries and galleries throughout the metropolitan area. She was a proud member of the Long Island Craftsmen's Guild, Artist Craftsman of New York and The Sculptors Alliance. She took great pride in teaching at the Great Neck Senior Citizen Center.
Among some of the prizes she has received were the Craft Day Merit Award at N.Y.U., Award of Excellence for outstanding craftsmanship design at the Emily Lowe Gallery and the Artist-Craftsmen Certificate of Honorable Mention for sculpture. She did her copper enameling, sculpturing and painting in her own studio in Kensington.
To her fellow artists she was known to have a great eye for proportions in sculpture and wasn't afraid to try new things with the various mediums. To her friends and family she was kind, generous, understanding, cultured, compassionate and had the most wonderful sense of humor. She will be missed by all who knew her.
