Despite a strong defensive performance, the Great Neck South Rebels football team closed out their league schedule with a 21-0 loss to Calhoun on Saturday.
A tight 6-0 game at halftime was decided on two Calhoun drives on either end of the third quarter. On their first possession, quarterback Dennis Dwyer found Mike Villa for a 27-yard reception to the Rebels' 33 yard line. Two Brendan Finnerty runs covered the remaining distance for a touchdown. Dwyer then raced around right tackle and into the end zone for a two point conversion to make the score 14-0. Late in the quarter, Finnerty caught a pass from Dwyer, broke a tackle, then raced 62 yards to the end zone for the game's final score. Finnerty finished the day with 119 yards in addition to his two scores.
Several defensive players had strong games for the Rebels. Junior middle linebacker Jeffrey Pak continued his strong season with six tackles. Senior Adam Eskreis sacked Dwyer twice. Senior defensive tackle Xico Flores also recorded a sack to go along with four tackles. Senior strong safety Fatih Ket blocked an extra point in the first quarter. Senior free safety Andrew Kim had four tackles. Senior linebacker Carlos Mercedes and Brandon Kaye each had three tackles. The Rebels also recovered three Calhoun fumbles.
The Rebels close out their season with a visit to Kings Point to take on cross-town rival Great Neck North. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13.
