Superintendent Search Reopened
At its meeting of May 12, the Great Neck Board of Education announced that it has asked Superintendent William A. Shine to enter into a new six-month employment agreement. This action was taken because the board's search has not yet resulted in the selection of a new superintendent. Therefore, the "Shine Sunday" open house, scheduled for June 8 at South High School, has been canceled.

Capturing Great Neck
For a community like Great Neck that prides itself on placing the needs of children first and protecting them at all costs, the rogue storm that swept through the quiet suburban streets in 1987 began with a few dark clouds on the horizon. There were whispers of a police investigation that focused on interviewing children who had attended computer classes at the home of an award-winning teacher, Arnold Friedman. The investigation had stemmed from the results of a postal department sting operation that had discovered child pornography in a raid of the Friedman's home. The wind of fear was also fanned by the fact that his wife, Elaine, ran a playgroup for preschoolers in the home, although in the end she was never charged with any wrongdoing. Drawn into the web of accusations was 18-year-old Jesse Friedman, who was in his first semester at SUNY Purchase and who had come home for the Thanksgiving holiday. With the arrest of Arnold and Jesse for child molestation on the day before Thanksgiving, highlighted by hordes of cameras and reporters that descended on Great Neck, the storm erupted full force.

The Island Waves Girls Hockey Team has completed their second successful season. This year the 16 and under girls tied their league, made up of girls teams from the tri-state area for first place.
