  • News: Richard Deems Announces Candidacy for VGN Mayor

    "I have a philosophical difference with the way this village has been run lately," says Richard Deem who has made the decision to turn his beliefs into action and to run for the position of mayor of the Village of Great Neck. He continues, "We have been blitzed with subdivisions and large developments, much of which have been sponsored with our tax money. At the same time, we have seen our village infrastructure decay due to inadequate preventative maintenance, failure to perform needed and periodic upgrades to village facilities and inadequate oversight."   • News: Nassau County Ready for Emergency

    "Alert not alarmed" and "prepared not scared" were two of the slogans suggested by Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi at a press conference on Thursday, March 20. Mr. Suozzi called the meeting to announce the county's preparedness efforts now that the country is at war. In a show of solidarity he was joined by Police Commissioner James Lawrence, Director of Emergency Management Richard O'Kane, Commissioner of Health David Ackerman, Legislature Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs, Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, North Hempstead Deputy Supervisor Tony D'Urso, Glen Cove Mayor Maryann Holzkamp and several village mayors.   • Sports: Five Penn Fencers Qualify for NCAAs

    Five members of the University of Pennsylvania men's and women's fencing teams have qualified for the 2003 NCAA Championships, to be held at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado from March 20-23. Senior Yale Cohen and junior Andrew Radu are the only two members of the Red and Blue who will be making a return trip to the NCAAs, while three Quakers will be making their championship debut.   • Sports: Blazers Hard Work in the Cold Leads to Hot Start

    Baseball season is officially underway for the Great Neck North Blazers, but apparently the weather has not coincided. Old Man Winter is still lingering around even as the start of Spring nears, but the bitter cold has not stopped the Blazers. One of the few baseball teams around the county to start off the preseason with simultaneous practices indoors, and outdoors, the Great Neck North Blazers have been hard at work, rain or shine, hot or cold.
