Proposing New Athletic Fields for Great Neck
Great Neck may soon see the development of new athletic fields for the community through a joint effort of the Great Neck Park District and the Great Neck Public Schools. The park district and the school district are now exploring the possibility of developing a large piece of unused school district property at the site of the former Cuttermill School on Watermill Lane. Although the park district would do the actual revitalization work, and it would be a park district facility, the new athletic fields would be open for use by all students in the school district.

Quest for GNPS Superintendent on Track
"There are several viable, credible candidates for the role of superintendent that we will present to the board of education in the first week in March," stated Vincent T. Beni, Ed.D of Focus Consulting Associates. Dr. Beni has led the national search to find someone to take up the challenges of leading the Great Neck School District while also possessing the character traits deemed essential to follow a "legendary educational leader, Bill Shine." Dr. Beni was addressing the Jan. 29 meeting of the United Parent Teacher Council to update the parent leaders on the progress of the search. He was decidedly positive about the results of the far ranging search.

South High Boys Excel at County
After concluding a very successful regular season, the Rebel boys' fencing team entered the Nassau County individual championships at Garden City High School this past Saturday morning with high hopes. For each of the three weapons, there were 24 entrants from around the county. After the first round, 12 fencers advanced based on their five matches. Following the second round, six fencers in each weapon advanced to the final round. Spencer Goldstein, a junior and seeded no. 1 in sabre based on his season record, won the individual county championship for the second straight year. In the final round, Spencer beat all five competitors convincingly to win the title. His teammate, senior Gabi Ayache took fourth place in sabre. South junior Alex Harvard finished in second place in epee, losing only one match in the final round. Max Peck, a sophomore, placed fourth in epee. After seven hours of fencing, the boys were exhausted, but thrilled with the outcome.
