Singing members of the Israel Defense Forces will perform in concert at Temple Israel of Great Neck on Sunday, Dec. 15. In addition, the performance will be highlighted by a special address on the Palestinian crisis by the second highest ranking Israeli military officer and a commander of a combat unit on the West Bank.

All funds raised by the sale of tickets to the concert will go to widows and orphans of Israeli soldiers. There will be no soliciting for funds at the concert.

"This will be an evening of solidarity with Israel and the Israel Defense Forces," said Lee Harounian, chairman of Temple Israel's Israeli Affairs Committee, which is sponsoring the program with The Friends of the Israel Defense Forces. "It provides a chance for us to show our support for Israel, a chance to actually meet young Israeli soldiers fighting for freedom and a chance to personally ask questions of them.

The IDF Musical Ensemble, all members of the Israeli Navy, entertain combat solders fighting on the front lines to boost their morale, perform on bases on the Israeli border and in public ceremonies. Once each year they travel to the United States, touring several cities before returning to Israel. This year's tour takes them to Boston, Detroit, Cleveland and Miami, as well as Long Island for the appearance at Temple Israel. Performances in Dix Hills during the past two years completely sold out.

A spokesperson for the ensemble said they perform traditional Israeli and Hebrew music, "happy songs." She said selections include Adon Olam, Halleluyah, Oseh Shalom, The Shema, Jerusalem of Gold and The Paratroopers Song, as well as many other well-known favorites.

A briefing on the Palestinian situation will be presented by Major General Moshe Evry-Sukenik, the IDF military attache in Washington, D.C. and the second hightest ranking Israeli military officer. He will give an overview on the current crisis and Israel's relationship with the Palestinians and plans the IDF and the Israeli government have to handle the crisis.

In addition, Capt. Danny Okin, the commander of a combat unit which saw fighting in Lebanon, the West Bank and Gaza, will discuss his firsthand experiences and discuss life on the front line. Capt. Okin was born and raised in Ra'anana, a city in the center of Israel, to parents who emigrated from South Africa when the State of Israel was taking its first steps. After finishing high school he joined the IDF and served in the Givaa'ti corps, one of the elite IDF combat units.

Tickets to the concert, which begins at 2 p.m., are $36 for adults and $18 for children under the age of 18. Benefactor tickets, priced at $180 per couple, entitle purchasers to a private reception with the performers prior to the concert and priority seating during the performance. Patrons, whose tickets are priced at $360 per couple, receive an IDF souvenir, in addition to admission to the private reception prior to the concert and priority seating.

A program will be published in coordination with the performance. Black and white ads in the program are available "in honor of," "in memory of" or containing an advertising or personal message. Business card size ads are $50, half page ads are $100 and full page ads are $150.

All payments should be by checks, made payable to "Friends of the IDF" and sent to 298 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10001. Payment can also be made by most major credit cards.
