On Veterans Day, the rain lifted briefly in the afternoon. The family members of the six Great Neck residents who died on September 11, 2001 and many Great Neck residents and dignitaries gathered on Grace Avenue for the dedication of a plaque and lovely garden setting in honor of those lost and a reassurance to the families that we will never forget them. One family member remarked, "It is very touching that the community has done this. It is so hard to attend these memorials, but it means a lot to us."
Long Island American Heart Walk
On Sunday, Oct. 27, over 4,000 people from throughout Long Island joined the American Heart Association at the New York Institute of Technology and Nassau Community College to step out to save lives at the 2002 Long Island American Heart Walk. Some walked for themselves as survivors of heart disease. Others walked in memory of family members, friends or co-workers that have been lost to heart disease. All walked in honor of the more than 8,000 people from Nassau and Suffolk County who die each year from cardiovascular disease - the Long Island's No. 1 cause of death. Participants in the event raised $400,000 that will help fund American Heart Association research, community programs and cardiovascular education and advocacy.
