The Long View
The shoreline of Steppingstone Park is now a complete crescent, gently embracing Long Island Sound in a wide arc. On Sunday, July 22 the commissioners of the Great Neck Park District reclaimed the shoreline for the people. Chairman William Dobkin called the acquisition a "reaffirmation" of many values, among them patriotism, community involvement and civic pride, protection of the environment and an egalitarian spirit.

Hughes Captures First ESPY Award
In the midst of touring the country on a figure skating tour, what's a girl to do when she's nominated for five ESPY awards? If she's Sarah Hughes she would drop everything and make sure she can fit the night in her schedule. The ESPY awards, sponsored annually by ESPN, create a unique opportunity for the entertainment industry and the sports world to get together and honor the world's best athletes. ESPY stands for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, but it also means "to recognize." This year, the tenth annual ESPYs were held on July 10 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, CA.

Warren Golfs for Worthy Cause
He did not sink the putt that would have granted a million dollars to the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA) Scholarship Fund but it was still an unforgettable weekend for Guy Warren of Lake Success, the retired New York City firefighter nicknamed "Tin Cup," who rushed from the golf course into the burning towers on September 11.

LI Gold Coast Pro-Am Tournament for UCF
Today, Thursday, Aug. 1, is the last day to register for the third annual Long Island Gold Coast Pro-Am Tournament to benefit the United Community Fund of Great Neck and North New Hyde Park. The tennis tournament, presented by Sy Luba Heating and Air Conditioning, is set for Aug. 11.
