Two Great Neck North juniors, Andrew Phillips and Sam Scanlan were recently named as All Division Varsity Baseball selections for Nassau County. The team, the Great Neck North Blazers, was coached by Scott Bersin and Phil Kavanaugh. The awards were presented at a dinner at the Coral House in Baldwin on June 5.
Andrew Phillips, a power hitting catcher, has a varsity career batting average of .315. This year he led his team in slugging with an impressive .449 slugging average. Andrew was named the winner of the Donald S. Benjamin Scholar Athlete award in 1999. He was twice voted captain of the Maccabi baseball team.
This award is Sam Scanlan's second All Division selection. He is a pitcher/first baseman and has a varsity career average of .310. He looks forward to advancing his baseball career next year and beyond in college. Sam was voted a co-captain of the North squad as a junior and looks forward to leading them to the Conference B playoffs next year. He led his team this year with four conference wins and 33 strikeouts.
Jeremy Thies, another promising junior at Great Neck North was awarded an honorable mention division selection. He plays centerfield for the Blazers and excels at hitting and clutch defensive plays.
