North Middle School's Health Awareness Club and the Colette Coyne Melanoma Awareness Campaign (CCMAC) will host the Miles for Melanoma Walk-A-Thon on Sun, May 19, at the Middle School track, 77 Polo Road from 9 to 10 a.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Bring a hat and sunglasses and wear your favorite sunscreen while enjoying a stroll around the track, at your own pace, meeting old friends and making new ones. You will even receive a free T-shirt while supplies last.
This third annual Walk-a-thon is designed to raise public awareness about the dangers and causes of skin cancer, specifically melanoma, namely unsafe tanning and sun exposure.
The CCMAC began in 1998 in response to the death at age 30 of Great Neck South High School graduate Colette Coyne. Colette's mother approached North Middle Health Department Head Kathleen Walter with a request to honor her daughter's memory by educating students about the dangers of the sun. As an annual guest speaker in health classes, she shares her family's experience with skin cancer. Together, Ms. Coyne and Ms. Walter organized the Walk-a-thon in Colette's memory.
