The Kings Point baseball team defeated rival Coast Guard by a 3-2 final score in New London, CT on April 30 in their final contest of the regular season. Overall, the Mariners end the 2002 regular-season campaign with an 18-17 record, a 12-10 Knickerbocker ledger, and a 4-2 Skyline mark.

Senior pitcher Jeremy Chorik (Holidaysburg, PA) allowed just one hit over five innings and senior second baseman Jay DeBruhl (Camden, SC) hit two doubles to lead the Mariners to the 3-2 victory. The Blue and Gray scored a run in the first inning as freshman DH Mike Prim (Cumming, GA) hit a sac fly to score DeBruhl, who led off the game with a double. Kings Point's lead increased to 2-0 on a double steal in the fourth as Prim stole home. The Bears pulled to within one (2-1) on an unearned run in the sixth but Kings Point got an unearned run back in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Al Giordano (Landenberg, PA) reached base on an error to lead-off the inning. He was then scored on an RBI single by junior shortstop Brian Kelly (Palm City, FL). Coast Guard scored in the eighth and closed the gap to a run again, but the Bears stranded runners on first and second. In the bottom of the ninth, Coast Guard led off with a single. The Bears' Mike Feltovic added a one-out single, but sophomore pitcher Ben Earnest (Englewood, CO) got a double-play ball to end the game and pick up the save.

The Devils of FDU-Madison defeated Kings Point for the second consecutive year in the ECAC Metro NY/NJ Championship Tournament with a 10-9 final in Madison, NJ on May 3. FDU's Dustin Sheriff scored with 18 seconds left to play to break a 9-9 tie and give the Devils the victory. Last year, FDU posted a 16-15 win in the ECAC Title game.

The game was very evenly matched in the first half of play with the Devils holding a one-goal advantage (4-3) at the break. The Mariners' offensive engine kicked into gear in the third as Kings Point tallied four consecutive goals to go up 7-4. An unassisted goal by junior Ross Cutler (Vienna, VA) at 9:46 tied the game and started the scoring flurry. Junior Jim Krantz (Downingtown, PA) scored at 8:27 on a pass from freshman Dan Gately (Baltimore, MD) to give the Mariners the lead. Senior middie Phil Egge (Alexandria, VA) beat the keeper twice on back-to-back unassisted goals to put KP ahead by the 7-4 score. The Devils scored once at 2:56 in the third and then added a man-up tally with 50 seconds in the period to close the gap to one goal at 7-6, entering the fourth quarter of action. Kings Point responded to the FDU comeback with a goal by Krantz at 12:48 and Egge at 9:57 and the lead was back to three goals. The Devils' potent offense rattled off three goals in the next seven minutes to tie the game up at 1:54 before Sheriff netted the game-winner with 18 seconds left.

Egge led the Mariners with three goals while Cutler and senior captain Frank Zingales (East Northport, NY) each scored twice. Freshman Matt McCarthy (Germantown, MD) and Krantz also each scored. Assists were credited to Gately and junior Nick Watts (Safety Harbor, FL). In the crease, senior captain Teague Murphy (Long Beach, NY) had 13 saves as Kings Point ended the campaign with a 6-8 overall mark.

On a warm and sunny Saturday at the Academy, the Blue and Gray track team hosted their second meet of the year with the Kings Point Invitational being run on Tomb Field Track. There were plenty of fans on hand as this weekend also marked the annual Boy Scout Camporee, hosted by the regiment of Midshipmen. Full meet results can be found at www.nesportstime.com.

The day began in the field for the Mariners with the running events beginning at 11:30 a.m. In the pole vault, freshman Joe Bosco (Sunland, CA) matched his lifetime personal-best as he cleared 12'6" for a second-place finish. Freshman Jon Shiflett (Albuquerque, NM) and junior Mike Polakow (New Hartford, CT) were the throwers for the team. Shiflett was fourth in both the discus (105'4") and the hammer (101'). Polakow was second in the javelin (150'11"), fifth in the discus (94'4") and fifth in the hammer (97'6").

The Blue and Gray then took to the track and also had a series of great races. Sophomore Chris Kapfer (Tualatin, OR) ran his first full 5000 since returning from sea and from injury and won the event in a time of 15:33.30. Freshman Drew Williams (Lancaster, OH) was third in the 1500 in 4:05.48 and then was sent back to the track by Coach Gardner. Williams helped to pace cross-country teammate Kapfer in the 5000 by running the first mile with him. Sophomore Josh Bibb (Norman, OK) and junior Jon Bess (Cottage Grove, MN) also raced in the 1500, placing 12th and 15th respectively in times of 4:21.76 and 4:24.11. In the men's 3000, sophomores Brad Eastman (Saylorsburg, PA) and Ryan Ripley (Buffalo Grove, IL) were 14th and 15th in 9:53.38 and 10:06.95.

The Kings Point sprinting posse was led by rookies Andrew Ghiglia (Arroyo Grande, CA) and Frank Toner (Thousand Oaks, CA). In the 100-meter dash, Ghiglia was second in a time of 11.03 while Toner placed sixth in 12.09. Both freshman also ran the 200. Ghiglia crossed the line in 23.15, good for a tie for fifth place, and Toner ran a 10th-place time of 24.45. Freshman Ben Mathias (Lynwood, WA) was 16th in the 200 in 26.01. Freshman Pat McCrory (Eagle River, AK) and Mathias placed second and third in the 110-meter high hurdles. They had times of 18.17 and 19.89 respectively.

Kings Point had a plethora of runners in the middle distance events also. In the 400, the Blue and Gray entered four racers. Sophomore Todd Hoyt (Bend, OR) ran a 49.97 for second place. Freshman William Hall (Pearl River, NY) was third (51.14) while rookie Walter Hall (Pearl River, NY) placed fourth in 51.78. Senior Steve Madgwick (Garden City, KS) was 11th in 55.69. The men's 800 meters saw sophomore Alex Sichel (Westport, CT) place sixth in 2:00.5 while Bibb was 16th in 2:08.20.

The top performance on the distaff side came from freshman distance runner Chrissy Anderson (North Vernon, IN) who placed fourth in the 1500 in 5:01.46. Senior captain Brigitt Clausing (Menomonie, WI) and freshman Lindsay Conte (Huntington, NY) were sixth and seventh in times of 5:08.35 and 5:11.20. Junior Lisa Taylor (Kingston Springs, TN) was 13th in the 800 in 2:40.64.
