Kings Point's lacrosse team had a tough week in which they dropped two Knickerbocker Conference games to Stevens Tech and Montclair State to drop out of the top spot in the Conference. The Mariners are now 6-6 overall and 5-2 in the Conference.

The Blue and Gray saw their NCAA aspirations diminish for the second year in a row in a loss on April 17 against the Ducks of Stevens Tech. Stevens pulled out a 10-9 final on Tomb Field, handing the Blue and Gray their first Knickerbocker loss of the season. The Ducks need to win one of their last two Knickerbocker games to successfully defend their title and earn the bid to the NCAAs for the second year in a row.

Sophomore midfielder Erik Reckdenwald gave the Ducks two goals in a three-minute span to win the game for Stevens. Kings Point took their first lead of the day on a goal by junior Ross Cutler (Vienna, VA) that was assisted by junior Nick Watts (Safety Harbor, FL). The tally gave Kings Point a 9-8 advantage with 12:14 left completing a comeback from an 8-5 deficit. However, Reckdenwald scored unassisted at 6:03 to even the score back up. He then notched the game-winner with 3:05 left to go on a pass from freshman Eliot Dahood, this week's Knickerbocker Rookie of the Week.

Stevens Tech was led in scoring by Reckdenwald with three of the Ducks' 10 goals. Dahood ended the night with a goal and two helpers. For the Mariners, senior captain Frank Zingales (East Northport, NY) was the Blue and Gray's leading goal-getter with four. He scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 8-8 prior to Kings Point earning their first lead of the day. Watts had two goals and two assists, also registering four points. Cutler ended the day with two goals, rookie Matt McCarthy (Germantown, MD) scored once, junior middie Jim Krantz (Downingtown, PA) had two assists, and senior Phil Egge (Alexandria, VA) had one assist. Goalie Teague Murphy (Long Beach, NY), also a senior captain, made 17 saves in the loss.

On April 21, Kings Point travelled to Montclair State for their final Knickerbocker game and fell by a 9-7 final score, despite outshooting the Red Hawks by a 42-26 differential. Tied at 4-4 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Montclair State took the lead for good as rookie Kevin Gondres scored. Montclair then added another strike five minutes later for a two-goal lead. Egge notched a goal for Kings Point with 6:58 to play in the period, cutting the lead to 7-6. The Red Hawks went up again by two, but Krantz answered with a goal for Kings Point off of a pass from Egge, and the advantage was 7-6 entering the final quarter.

The two teams alternated goals as Montclair's Sean Pekarsky scored at 9:44 for an 8-6 lead. Ross Cutler again put the Mariners within one with a goal just over a minute later. Pekarsky then added another tally on a breakaway at 4:22 for the final goal of the game as Kings Point fell by a 9-7 final score. Krantz led Kings Point with two goals and two assists while Egge had two goals and an assist in the loss. Murphy tallied eight saves.

The Mariners traveled to Newburgh, NY to square off against Mt. St. Mary on Wednesday night. The Blue Knights pulled out a thrilling 5-4 win in 12 innings. Mt. St. Mary opened up a 3-1 lead after the sixth inning. The Mariners tied up the game in the seventh and took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth. Mt. St. Mary tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the frame and the game moved to additional innings. In the bottom of the 12th inning, Mike Cooper hit a double. He was sacrificed to third. The Blue and Gray then intentionally walked arguably the Knickerbocker's best hitter in Trevor Purcell. Cooper scored the winning run in the next at-bat on a wild pitch. Jason Mires was the winning pitcher while sophomore Ben Earnest (Englewood, CO) suffered the loss. Senior second baseman Jay DeBruhl (Camden, SC) went 2-5 in the loss with two RBI. Junior shortstop Brian Kelly (Palm City, FL) was also 2-5 and senior Adam LaReau (Nutley, NJ) was 2-4 with two runs scored.

Kings Point was rained out on Saturday in a rematch against Mt. St. Mary but the Blue and Gray returned to action at Baruch on Sunday, April 21. Kings Point improved their overall record to 15-15 and 12-8 in the Knickerbocker with two shutout wins of 12-0 and 9-0. In the first game, junior Steve Casapulla (Oxford, CT) got the win for the Mariners. He threw four innings with one hit, one walk, and five strikeouts. Senior Mike Ross (Timonium, MD) went 2-2 at the plate with two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Al Giordano (Landenberg, PA) was 2-4 with two runs and a double.

The second game saw more of the same as Kings Point posted another shutout, by a 9-0 score. Senior Jeremy Chorik (Holidaysburg, PA) struck out eight batters, walked one and allowed three hits in four innings on the mound. Rookie second baseman Brian Lipski (Bel Air, MD) had three hits in three tries and scored two runs from the lead-off spot. Junior designated hitter Jon Burnett (Helena, MT) was 3-4 with a double, a run, a stolen base and an RBI and Giordano was a perfect 2-2 with a double, an RBI, a run and a stolen base in the victory.

Kings Point's softball team stands in second place in the Skyline Conference with a 5-1 record (14-14 overall) after a 3-2 week. The week began with two losses on the road at Drew University. The Blue and Gray were shut out twice by the Rangers, both scores were 8-0. The first game saw Kings Point held to five hits, tallied by three batters. Senior catcher Kelly Glanding (Newark, DE) and sophomore third baseman Jena Jeffries (Columbia, SC) had two hits apiece, while sophomore second baseman Mickey Stark (Fargo, ND) notched the other hit for KP. Drew scored twice in the first frame, added five in the bottom of the third, and crossed the plate once in the fourth for the victory. Rookie pitcher Jill Cookson (29 Palms, CA) was on the mound in the loss. She pitched four innings, gave up eight earned runs on 10 hits, walked one and struck out none.

It was more of the same in the second game as the Blue and Gray were held to three hits by the strong arm of Ranger pitcher Deborah Kamorowski. All three hits were knocked by the Kings Point outfield. Sophomore left fielder Alison Martins (Severna Park, MD), junior center fielder Aileen Villano (Sacramento, CA), and freshman right fielder Sam Skeens (Hydeville, VT) each tallied a hit. Martins had the only extra-base hit of the day with a double and she also had a sack in the game. Cookson was again the losing pitcher after throwing four innings. She gave up three earned runs on seven hits.

The Mariners posted a win over Lehman College on Wednesday by an 8-3 final score. Rookie Liz Hagner (Freeland, MD) went 3-4 to lead the team to the win. She scored once, tallied four RBI, and hit a double. Ali Martins was 2-3 with an RBI and Cookson was the Mariners' winning pitcher. She threw four innings of one-hit softball and struck out four.

Despite foul weather on Saturday, April 20, Kings Point was able to get in two Skyline games on the road at Mt. St. Mary. The Mariners won both contests with a 10-8 victory in Game #1 and a 10-6 final in Game #2. Cookson won both games from the hill. She threw 13.5 innings on the day with four strikeouts, seven earned runs, and 15 hits in 54 at-bats. Glanding and Martins were each 4-8 in the two games, combined. Glanding scored two runs and had one RBI. Martins scored three runs, drove in four runs, and hit both a double and a triple. Jeffries nailed two homeruns for the Blue and Gray, one in each game.
