Arthur J. Levine

Arthur J. Levine, a resident of Great Neck since 1967, died on Jan. 7, 2002. He was born in Brooklyn on July 2, 1916. Mr. Levine was a CPA from 1940 to 1996. He was president of the Merrick Jewish Center (1952 to 1954), international president of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (1973 to 1977), vice president of the National Conference On Soviet Jewry (1976 to 1981) and was on the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency of Israel.
Mr. Levine personal commitments included the inclusion of women in the Conservative Rabbinate; the freedom of Soviet Jewry and the preservation/celebration of Jewish life in America. His personal passions were music, deep sea fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Rosalind E. Levine, a retired social worker, Hillside Hospital; his children, Nancy Levine Jordano, therapist from Oakland Hills, CA, Susan Levine, artist, Berkeley, CA, and Ketzel Levine, NPR correspondent, Portland, OR; his sister, Marilyn Gochberg; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Arrangements were made by the Riverside Nassau North Chapels, Great Neck.

Morris Berlind

Morris Berlind, 94, died at home of cancer on Jan. 8, 2002. Born in Russia, he was the son of the late Wolf and Anna (Rabinowitz) Berlind. Mr. Berlind lived in Great Neck from 1949 until May 2000. He was president of H. Berlind, Inc., a wholesale, housewares and electrical supply company, and spent almost 30 years in retirement working on behalf of peace, tolerance, justice, Jewish concerns, and preservation of the environment. He is survived by his beloved wife Ruth; his son Allan Burlind of Middletown; his daughter, Binnie DeLarm of McLean, VA; his sister Mollie Hechtman of Englewood, NJ; and three adored grandchildren, Lisa Masoni, Andrew Berlind and Nina Fry. Funeral services, conducted by Rabbi Seth Reimer, were held in Middletown on Jan. 10. A future memorial service in NY is planned.
