The recent forum sponsored by the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System for community and school leaders on the topic of bioterrorism and emergency management reflected the new seriousness and resolve that has raised the topic from a low profile item to screaming headlines. The quiet cooperation that has existed behind the scenes for some time between law enforcement agencies and the public health system culminated in a very public shotgun wedding after the anthrax shockwaves swept the country.
When a Child is Afraid to Fly
With the school holidays approaching this month and in February, some families are in a quandry about airplane travel and the new fears of flying that some children are experiencing. So we posed this question to Victor Fornari, M.D., associate chairman for Education and Training, Department of Psychiatry, North Shore University Hospital: What should the parents do, if a child is expressing strong fears of flying?
