The Great Neck South boys varsity football team achieved a thrilling victory on Saturday, Nov. 3. The Rebels shellacked Bellmore JFK by a mark of 37-8, earning their first win of the season.

In the first, South scored on a safety scored by senior Victor Pawelzik, who blocked a punt out of the end zone and on an eight-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Michael Sudberg to senior Greg Green. Senior Rich Femia added an extra point on a kick after the touchdown.

Bellmore JFK then scored eight points on an 80-yard run and two point conversion, making the score 9-8 South at the end of the first.

The Rebels completely dominated the rest of the game. In the second quarter, the Rebels added 14 more points. Femia scored a touchdown on a 17-yard run, and senior Jesse Ronchetti scored in a two-point conversion. Green then scored another touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Sudberg. The Rebels led 23-8 at the half.

In the third, Green added another touchdown on a 15-yard pass from Sudberg, and sophomore Jamie Hill scored on a two-point conversion. Ronchetti then added another touchdown on a two-yard run. The score was 37-8 at the end of the third. This became the final score, as neither team scored in the last quarter. As a result of the game, the Rebels are 1-6, and Bellmore JFK is 0-7.

The game marked the culmination of what coach Jim Morrow has called a "tremendous rebuilding year."

The Rebels' offense, which was struggling greatly at the beginning of the season, performed brilliantly. The defense, which has performed consistently well throughout the year, also played well.

South was led by several outstanding individual performances in the game. As quarterback, Sudberg completed eight of 12 passes for a total of 120 yards. Green scored an incredible three touchdowns, and Hill ran for a total of 112 yards on 15 carries. Junior Maximo Mercedes and Femia led the defense with 10 and eight tackles respectively.

The Rebels' season is almost over. The team has one more game on Saturday, Nov. 10 against 5-2 Calhoun. While the Rebels are 1-6, it is clear that the squad's hard work has paid off and that the team has improved significantly this year.
