The Great Neck South boys varsity football team has recently shown some signs of progress, but its season has remained difficult and so far, winless. The team is currently 0-6, although it has improved in recent encounters.

On Saturday, Oct. 27, the team made its second straight competitive showing while losing to Herricks by the score of 30-14. Herricks scored 9 points in the second quarter and 7 in the third. Both teams scored 14 in the last quarter.

Junior Maximo Mercedes scored a touchdown on a 2-yard run; the team then successfully completed a 2-point conversion on a run by sophomore Michael Sudberg. Sudberg then threw a 62-yard pass to senior Jesse Ronchetti for another touchdown; the team got no extra points after this play.

The prior week, on Saturday, Oct. 20, the team almost succeeded in beating Port Washington, but lost by the tight score of 21-14. The game was a competitive struggle throughout.

Port Washington scored 7 points in each of the first two quarters. The Rebels then proceeded to score 2 touchdowns in the second quarter. Ronchetti scored on a 14-yard pass from Sudberg, and sophomore Jamie Hill scored on a 17-yard run. Mercedes added extra point kicks after each for a total of 14 points, which tied the game. But Port Washington went on to win after scoring another touchdown in the third quarter.

On Oct. 13, the Rebels lost by a mark of 21-0 to MacArthur. A large crowd was on hand to cheer for the Rebels in their homecoming game. The Rebels came close to scoring in an exciting offensive drive in the second quarter, but this effort did not come to fruition.

Although the season has not been easy for the Rebels, it appears that the team is gradually improving. The offense, scoreless in the first four games, has scored 14 points in each of the squad's last two games.

The competition in Conference A-II is tough, but the Rebels have been gaining the much needed experience that the youthful and relatively inexperienced team needs if it is to have future success. Rebuilding and maintaining are the team's goals this season, and the determined squad has been working hard to achieve these objectives.
