Neighborhood Adult Softball Game Now in Its Tenth Year
Baseball legend Satchel Paige said, "Age is a question of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter." The more than 50 middle aged players of the Allenwood Neighborhood Softball Game strongly adhere to this philosophy. We don't mind coming home after a game with an occasional muscle pull, sprain or bruise. We don't mind taking Advil even before the game starts in anticipation of things to come. We don't mind jumping out of bed at 7 a.m. on a Saturday morning after a tough week at work when we should be getting needed sleep. We don't mind the stares we get when picking up bagels for the family after the game because we are covered from head to toe with infield dirt and grass stains. We don't mind or understand being asked by our spouses after a rainy morning, "Wasn't it raining? How could you play in the rain?" We don't mind them telling us that we look and smell worse than a dead elephant in a garbage dump in New Jersey. We don't mind the skeptical smirks we get from our friends when we tell them about the diving, tumbling catch we made to save the game. We don't mind any of these things because we love the game. We love the camaraderie, the good natured kidding, the competition and the exercise. It makes us feel good all weekend. So none of those things really matter.
