The Second Annual UCF Pro-Am Tennis Tournament will be hosted by the Wildwood Pool and Tennis Club on Sunday, Aug. 12, from 1:30-5 p.m. The event provides an opportunity for local players to team up with the area's top teaching professionals in a competitive round-robin format. A minimum rating of 4.0 is required, plus the tax deductible $100 entry fee. This year women players rated 4.0 or higher are also invited to play with the pros in a mixed doubles round, starting at 1:30. Pros who have committed to play are Bob Litwin, David Fischbach, Willie Notar, Keith Kamborian, Adam Mandell, Scott Seeman, Dean Ehren, Ron Rodriguez, Rick Liebman and Ronnie Kahn.

Sy Luba Heating and Air-Conditioning, longtime supporter of tennis in Great Neck, is presenting the event, which has been dubbed the Long Island Gold Coast Pro-Am Tournament. Last year's inaugural event, held at the Parkwood Courts and also sponsored by Sy Luba, was appropriately enough won by Doug Luba, who teamed with Keith Kamborian to beat Todd Ehren and Adam Mandell in the finals.
"It's a great chance to get on the court with the best players in town," said Luba. "For their part, the pros are willing to donate their time, as a way to give back to the community that has supported them all these years," said Harriet Becker, vice president for special events with the United Community Fund.
According to Rick Liebman, who is the event coordinator along with Ronnie Kahn, "This group of pros have logged teaching hours in the hundreds of thousands, mostly to Great Neck residents. Kahn added, "This tournament sort of closes the circle. Todd Ehren and Adam Mandell were both in my junior programs and here they are playing together. That gives a certain satisfaction."
Both Kahn and Liebman urged for the inclusion of women this year. "There are a lot of excellent players who have come up through the ranks of the North Shore and Inter-club women's leagues. This is their chance to compete with the pros who have been coaching them. It should be great fun," said Liebman. Kahn added, "Mixed doubles is a huge draw at Wildwood. We're looking for a large viewer turnout from club members." Michael Larkin, executive director of UCF, added, "We were delighted that Wildwood agreed to play host. It's our hope that tennis fans throughout the community will attend."
To register, call 482-8101. Space is limited, so be sure to register before the Aug. 1 entry deadline. Each participant will receive a commemorative shirt. Net proceeds will benefit the United Community Fund of Great Neck and North New Hyde Park. Luba said, "The UCF does a tremendous amount of good for the community. I get a special charge knowing my forehands and backhands go for a good cause."
