If the name Sarah Hughes has not appeared in the Record lately, it is not because she has been idle in her conquest of figure skating titles. As reported inThe New York Times last week, she placed second after Michelle Kwan in the National Championship event in Boston.

Great Neck's skating star Sarah Hughes.

Ms. Hughes's next effort will take place in Tokyo in the third week in February at the Grand Prix finals. This will be followed by the World Championship event in Canada in March.

Asked why no boys ever won in the contests in which she engages, Ms. Hughes explained, ''The boys' events are held separately. There are also ice dancing events, which are co-ed. But my specialty is figure skating.''

Ms. Hughes's younger sister, Emily, is also continuing to star in ice skating events. Next month she will go to Copenhagen to participate in an event there.

If the subject is figure skating, the Great Neck teenager to figure on is undoubtedly Sarah Hughes.
