Having gone out-of-town on vacation right after Christine Salita's announcement that she was resigning from her post as library director, I had quite a bit of time to reflect on this sad turn of events and on the whole library issue that has evolved over the past five-and-a-half years. I have just one comment on the entire mess --- It is a disgrace!
It is a disgrace that this so-called ''jewel'' in our community could so quickly, and so selfishly, be turned into a public spectacle.
It is a disgrace that expenditure of public funds could be turned over to elected officials who could never seem to agree over anything, unless they were all from the same group of supporters.
It is a disgrace that a so-called intelligent community could create an atmosphere so distasteful, so divisive, that many good people have given up on the library, and, qualified though they may be, would never, ever consider running for the library board and getting caught up in that ugly atmosphere.
And the greatest disgrace of all is that a supremely professional, highly intelligent library director could be forced out of a potentially perfect job in the well-known, generally well-respected Great Neck community, ''thanks'' to never-ending and self-centered power struggles, childish tantrums, wild accusations, and unbelievably cruel stories in very biased and short-sighted daily newspapers.
It is a real disgrace!
