Fifteen-year-old Sarah Hughes, a tenth-grader at North High School, has been putting Great Neck on the ice-skating map since she was a pre-schooler. Her exploits have been recorded in the Record regularly. Her latest triumphs surpass even the heights she has been reaching in the past.

Sarah Hughes

On the weekend of Oct. 27, Ms. Hughes performed in State America, in Colorado Springs, and was second only to world champion Michelle Kwan. The event was covered on ABC television.

On Nov. 6, Ms. Hughes left for a two-and-half week stay in Europe, first in Germany, where she will compete for the Nations Cup, and then in St. Petersburg for the Cup of Russia. At both events she will perform a short program, and a long program to Don Quixote. What with her coach, her choreographer, her dressmaker, and, of course, her mother, Amy Hughes, all working with her, as well as her determination to keep up with her studies, Ms. Hughes is a busy girl. ''I can't say enough about how cooperative and helpful her teachers have been all along, making it possible for her to maintain her scholastic standing and participate in all those skating events as well,'' said Amy Hughes.

In addition, the November issue of Teen People magazine had an article called ''Superjock,'' featuring Sarah Hughes.

Emily Hughes

Following closely in her sister's skatesteps, Emily Hughes, 11 and a sixth grade student at North Middle School, medaled at the North Atlantic competition, which made her eligible to compete in the Eastern Sectional Championships in Massachusetts. She performed on Oct. 29 at the Rockefeller Rink, and will participate in the tree-lighting ceremony at Rockefeller Center, an event to be covered by ABC television. Then she will travel to Vail, Colorado, to perform in the televised Christmas show there.

''Both Sarah and Emily were fortunate enough to have as their first grade teacher Ms. Pat Master, who encouraged them to pursue the activities they loved and to keep up with their studies as well,'' said Amy Hughes. ''She is still their good friend.''

The girls' brother, David, 19, and a freshman at Cornell University, is a member of the college's varsity hockey team. ''Ice skating is our passion,'' said Amy Hughes.

In future issues, further ''Hughes News'' will be reported.
