It seems to us that somebody out there does not like us. Somebody has it ''in'' for Great Neck.

Here we are, a vibrant, active community with outstanding schools, libraries, and park facilities, a unique local arts center, real grass roots government looking out for our interests. People move to Great Neck to be able to take advantage of our facilities --- indeed, at times people even try some illegal maneuvers to use our schools and our parks.

We are concerned citizens, community-minded activists, and very caring parents. Great Neck surely boasts a well-above-average number of volunteers working in a wide variety of public service posts to improve the quality of life for all of us. This community, its very involved parents and its tremendously nurturing top-notch school system, consistently turns out a wealth of bright, well-rounded, high achieving youngsters who are bound to continue the tradition of intelligent, caring, involved adults who will secure the future we all want.

So why is it so popular to feature negative stories about Great Neck in the daily newspapers?

Sure, we have our problems too. And, yes, our problems are generally the same as those in other communities. But Great Neck is hardly weighted down with troubles, hardly overwhelmed with violence and crime and teens running wild. Why anyone would choose to use Great Neck as an example of a ''problem town'' of any sort is a mystery to this newspaper. And why it is done on a pretty regular basis is one of the mysteries of all times.

It does appear that the dailies love the opportunity to ''knock'' Great Neck. They seem so delighted with bad news about us that they allow very biased opinion pieces by people actually involved in issues, and ''news'' stories that more often than not appear contrived; yet those very same papers often refuse to publish responses.

Having lived and worked in Great Neck for close to 27 years, and having raised two children in this community, I am stunned time and again when I read such articles in major newspapers. It is very easy to write a piece or a news story and consider only one side. I imagine it is pretty simple to take a problem that exists in this community and blow it out-of-proportion, never considering the fact that the same problem, the same issue, probably exists in other local communities --- but why disturb one of our neighbors.

It's time to stop singling out Great Neck for individual attention on universal issues.

It's time for fair play!
