Congressional Candidates Debate the Issues
The differences were easily discernible as incumbent 5th District Congressman Gary Ackerman, a Democrat seeking re-election to his 10th term, faced Republican challenger Dr. Edward Elkowitz, a physician and a 35-year Great Neck resident, in last week's debate sponsored by the Kings Point Civic Association. The voters were offered a very clear choice as the candidates addressed issues such as ''big government,'' tax reform, abortion, and school vouchers.

GNVOA Meeting
Calling for community cooperation, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Regional Director Ray Cowen updated local officials on the Lockheed-Martin cleanup. Mr. Cowen addressed the Great Neck Village Officials Association's Oct. 25 meeting, offering a brief review of upcoming off-site activities.

North Cross Country at the Conference Championships
The boys cross country team under Coach Adam McKenzie competed at the Conference 3 championships held at Bethpage State Park Oct. 28. North placed third with 74 points. Lynbrook was second with 69 points and Floral Park won the meet with 46 points. North qualified for the State Qualifiers to be held Saturday, Nov. 4. The top five teams in all conferences qualify for the Nassau County Championships. Junior Eddie Byrnes placed the team with a fifth place showing. His time was 18:17.

Girls Field Hockey at South, Finishing Off a Season of Hard Work
Although the girls field hockey team at Great Neck South, a combined group of varsity and junior varsity players, did not have their best season, they still showed a deep commitment to unity and working together as a team. Their coach, Jane Maher, is the current head of girls athletics at South High. This was her second year coaching the team, along with her assistant, Andrea Patruzzi. Though their season, which went from Aug. 28 until Oct. 24, recently ended, Maher is already planning for next year.
