The Great Neck South Rebel team under Chris McKenzie made their second trip to the Penn Relays in three years and placed second in the 4X400 relay Thursday, April 27. The Rebels ran in the first of 39 heats. Junior Rachel Supris led off with a 67 split and a fifth place spot. Freshman Vala Durvett was clocked in a 68 followed by freshman Christine Chen who also turned in a 68 time. The team was still in fifth place. The anchor leg was junior Shnita McPhatter who ran a 63 second 400 and brought the team to second place in a time of 4:26, a season's best time. The winner ran 4:24. The second place earned the quartet silver medals. In 1997, the 4X400 relay team won. The Rebels also sent a 4X100 relay team. Senior's Shirley Koon and Patti Hong were teamed up with McPhatter and Supris. They ran 52.9.

Other highlights were from the Derrick Atkins Invitation April 24. The sprint medley relay team of McPhatter, Hong, Koon and Supris placed fourth. The freshman sprint medley placed ninth with Durvett, Chen, Caroline Green and Becky Wallack. Hong jumped 4' 10" and Supris jumped 4' 6". McPhatter long-jumped 16' 9", Hong jumped 13' 10", and Koon jumped 13' 9 1/2". Junior Ebony McPhatter (Shnita's cousin) threw the discus 89' 10" and freshman Andrea Myria threw the discus 68' 7". Hong high-jumped a personal best 5' 2" in a meet against Port Washington on April 11, in which South defeated Port, Calhoun, and Carey.

In the season opener at Manhasset High School, fine performances were turned in by Shnita in long jumping, a personal best 17' 3". Ebony threw the shot 29' 7". Freshman Rebecca Wallack ran a 6:04 1500, while freshman Stephanie Brown threw the discus 90' 6". Hong triple jumped 32' 7".

The track team has a 7-2 record with their only losses coming at the hands of JFK Bellmore (indoor county champs) and Long Beach (runner up Class A champs).

Their last conference meet was scheduled for Tuesday, May 2 against Southside, Mepham, and Floral Park. South will participate in the Port Washington Invitation May 4, 5 and will run the Gold Coast Relays at Manhasset May 12. South will go to Lawrence May 15 to partake in the Division championships. The County championships will take place May 24 and 25 at Mitchel Field by Hofstra, and Kings Point will be the site of the State Qualifiers. South has 27 members on the team and there are five seniors on the team: Hong, Koon, Ida Tsaluk, Karen Lavaux and Christine Faley. Hong, Koon, Shnita and Ebony McPhatter serve as captains.
