This past weekend would be no different than any other weekend for the Academy's Track and Field team. The squad has dominated competition week in and week out and has become one of the top teams in the region. This past weekend the Blue and Gray took home the second-place trophy at the Collegiate Track Conference Championships surpassing 12 teams, and finishing second only to Sacred Heart. Senior Wayne Allen (Danbury, TX), who has already qualified for the 2000 NCAA Championships on May 24-27, was the weekend's Most Valuable Player. Allen won the 100 meters in 10.80 and the 200 meters in 21.67. He defended his 200 meter-title of a year ago, and added the 100-meter title to his belt this year.

"Our athletes stepped up and scored points in spots when we really needed them to," said Co-Head Coach Gary Gardner of his squad. Freshman Kris Houghton (Beaverton, OR) placed second in the 1500 meters in 4:00.57, just missing first place. He came back on the 4x800 to run the fastest split of the meet in 1:57.90. Senior co-captain Scott Sleeper (McKinney, TX) had the best meet of his career placing fifth in the 400 meters in a time of 51.28 and also finished in fourth place running on the 4x400 relay team. Sleeper ran a 49.98 split in the 4x400. In the field events, junior thrower Ty McMichael (Waveland, MS) recorded a third-place finish in the hammer throw and the discus. McMichael's counterpart, freshman Steve Hohenshelt (Brookfield, CT), did damage as usual, placing third in the shot put with a toss of 13.69m, and then followed McMichael with a fourth-place tally in the hammer throw in 37.96m. In the high jump, freshman Nick Fenzel (Jefferson, MD) placed fifth with a clear of 5'10". Freshmen John Rapacki (Hauppauge, NY) and Jeremy Coatsworth (Reading, PA) finished the meet on high notes, placing second and fourth respectively in the pole vault with leaps of 12' and 10'6. Also posting great meets were seniors Kevin Croanau (Garden City, NY) and PJ Margelis, along with freshman Mike Polakow (New Hartford, CT). Croanau placed second in the decathlon with a score of 4,138 while Margelis finished second in the race walk. Polakow also threw the javelin 40.32m, good enough for sixth place.

The Mariners team won their fourth consecutive game on Saturday with a 15-2 win over Richard Stockton, improving their overall record to 6-3, and a perfect 5-0 in the Knickerbocker Conference. Both teams were undefeated in Conference play coming into Saturday's game, and the battle was for first place in the Knickerbocker Conference.

Leading the way with three goals and four assists was freshman Ross Cutler (Vienna, VA). Cutler's seven points moved him two points ahead of previous team-leading scorer freshman Jim Krantz (Downingtown, PA). Cutler now leads the team in scoring with 46 points, coming from 22 goals and a team-high 24 assists. Krantz finished the game with two goals and two assists and is currently ranked second on the team with 44 points (29 goals, 15 assists). Sophomore Phil Egge (Alexandria, VA) also had a great game, tallying three goals and one assist. Egge is in third place on the scoring list, posting 19 goals and seven assists this season.

Freshman Nick Watts (Safety Harbor, FL) ended the afternoon adding two goals of his own. Watts is fifth on the team with 20 points (13 goals, nine assists), just one point behind sophomore Frank Zingales (East Northport, NY), who is fourth on the team with 21 points. Zingales posted one goal and one assist to help in the Mariners' effort. Juniors Douglas Greaker (Bay Shore, NY) and George O'Connor (Commack, NY) totaled two goals and one assist. Greaker notched one goal and one assist and O'Connor scored one goal in the opening minutes of the game. Senior Brandt Hager (Annapolis, MD) tallied one goal to round out the Mariners' scoring. Senior stopper Morgan Ames (Alexandria, VA) tallied 14 saves and allowed one goal in 59 minutes of play.

The sailing team hosted the Admiral's Cup this past weekend as twenty of America's top teams came to the Academy to compete. The Mariners finished the home Regatta in 14th place. The 20-team race held competition in three divisions. The Blue and Gray started off slow in the early races and was unable to catch-up. In A Division, sophomore skipper Matt Schubert (Annapolis, MD) and freshman Janna Ott (Las Vegas, NV) teamed together and finished the highest for Kings Point. The two produced a tenth place finish. They finished in the top 10 on five occasions, but were hurt with five outcomes below 10th place. The B-Division boat consisted of freshman skipper Stu Colie (Point Pleasant, NJ) along with crews sophomore Chris Breland (Rockwall, TX) and freshman Jared Leigh (Pasadena, MD). The group finished in 13th place in B Division. In C Division, Kings Point was represented by freshman skipper David Chapman (Kailua, HI) and junior crew Eric Metz (Cape May, NJ). Chapman and Metz finished the division in 16th place. The Regatta concluded at 2:00 on Sunday, two hours early, due to a low-wind factor.

Kings Point's softball team got back on track this week by winning for the first time since opening day. The Mariners played two doubleheaders and posted a 1-3 week.The Mariners are now 2-14 overall and 1-6 in the Skyline Conference.

The women's softball team split a pair of one-run games on Saturday in the drizzle and rain of Kings Point Park.The Blue and Gray dropped the opening game by a 13-12 score but then turned it around in the second game for an 8-7 win. In the first game, the Mariners jumped ahead to an 8-1 lead in the first two innings. The Dolphins of Mt. St. Vincent rallied to take an 11-10 lead in the fourth. Kings Point fought back and regained the lead (12-11) in the fifth before Mt. St. Vincent added the tying and game-winning runs in the top of the sixth inning. Senior Shawna Stallings (Seabrook, TX) had a terrific game for the Mariners. Stallings was 3-4 at the plate with a double, an RBI, and three runs scored. She was also credited as the losing pitcher throwing all seven innings for the Mariners. Freshman third baseman Mickey Stark (Fargo, ND) was 2-2 with two runs scored and two walks. In the second game, Stallings registered her first collegiate victory with an 8-7 win on the mound. At the plate, she again was superb going 2-2 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Sophomore catcher Kelly Glanding (Newark, DE) was 2-3 with two doubles, three runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Earlier last week, the women's softball team lost two games Wednesday afternoon at St. Joseph's. The Mariners fell by scores of 29-4 and 11-3. In the first game, Stallings provided the offense as she went 2-3 and scored a run. Senior leftfielder Brenda Matheson (Alamo, CA) went 1-3 and also scored a run. On the mound, Glanding was the losing pitcher hurling in three innings. In the second game, Stallings was the losing pitcher as Kings Point fell by a 11-3 final. She also went 1-3 at the plate. Senior Coleen Quinn (Brick, NJ) scored a run and went 2-3 from the batters box.

The Academy's tennis team rebounded from their 3-6 loss to Manhattanville by defeating York College on Wednesday by a score of 8-1. Kings Point won eight of the nine matches to improve to 9-1 on the year. Senior captain Bernie Deysson (Stamford, CT), who returned to the lineup 100 percent after an injury, won the #1 singles match, 10-7. From there, Kings Point swept the remaining singles matches. Senior Justin Crawford (Sun Lakes, AZ), sophomore Todd Stallings (Seabrook, TX), freshman Brent Thompson (Appleton, MN), junior Andrew Behlke (Watertown, WI), and senior Mike Price (Fridley, MN) won the #2 through #6 singles matches respectively. The Mariners won two of three of the doubles matches behind strong showings. The duo of sophomore Rob Harris (Las Vegas, NV) and junior Mark Shanks (Bel Air, MD) won their match 9-8 and the pair of senior Mike Price (Fridley, MN) and freshman Sang Yi (Bethesda, MD) blanked their opponent 8-0.

With only a half-day's rest, the Academy's tennis team won their second-consecutive contest in two days on Thursday. The Mariners topped SUNY Old Westbury, 8-1, winning eight of the nine matches to improve to 10-1 on the year. With the win, Kings Point also improved their Skyline Conference record to 5-1. Senior captain Bernie Deysson won the #1 singles match, 10-1. From there, Kings Point swept the remaining singles matches. Justin Crawford, Todd Stallings, freshman Zach Mouton (New Iberia, LA), Mike Price and Brent Thompson won the #2 through #6 singles matches respectively. The Mariners won two of three doubles matches behind strong showings. The duo of Rob Harris and Mark Shanks won their match 8-2 and the pair of Mike Price and freshman John Lynch (Milton, DE) won their match by forfeit.

The match versus Ramapo that was scheduled for this past Saturday was rained out. Kings Point is currently 10-1 overall and owns a 5-1 Skyline Conference mark.

The Academy's Baseball team played three teams and five games this week posting a 2-3 record. Kings Point owns a 5-12 overall record and 2-6 Knickerbocker Conference record.

The Mariners started last week with a date with rival Mount St. Mary. The team fell in a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to the Blue Knights. The Mariners took a 4-0 lead in the first and increased it to 6-1. The Blue Knights rallied and came back to tie the game in the eighth. In the ninth, Mt. St. Mary hit a homerun to win to take their first lead at 7-6. The Blue and Gray couldn't convert in the bottom of the ninth and fell by the 7-6 final.

The Blue and Gray would split each of the weekend's doubleheaders. On Saturday, The Kings Point baseball team won a 5-3 game over Knickerbocker Conference foe SUNY Old Westbury and then Old Westbury won the second game by a 9-3 score. In the first game, junior hurler Mike Albritton (Tampa, FL) got the win after throwing a complete game. He went seven innings allowing four hits and two earned runs while fanning nine batters. The Mariners took a 1-0 edge in the third inning. Old Westbury scored two runs in the fourth to take the advantage, but the Blue and Gray responded with two runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth. Freshman Harlow Wood (Powsbo, WA) was 2-3 in the game with two runs scored and an RBI. Freshman Brian Kelly (Palm City, FL) was 1-3 with an RBI triple while sophomore Mike Ross (Timonium, MD) was also 1-3 but with a two-RBI double. In the second game, the Mariners opened up a 2-1 lead in the first. Old Westbury scored two runs in the third to go up 3-2 and never trailed in the remainder of the game. Junior Jeff Dahl (Fairfax Station, VA) was 2-3 with an RBI and a walk. Ross was 1-2 with two runs and two walks.

On Sunday, the Mariners traveled to Vassar to face the Brewers in a doubleheader. Kings Point lost the first game 13-10 and then rebounded to win the second game by a score of 11-1.
