The recently completed 1999-2000 basketball season was a transitional one for the Great Neck South High Rebels. On the one hand, the team participated for the first time in a newly-structured, highly-competitive conference, with such powerhouse teams as Port Washington and Elmont. On the other hand, the team's record of 7-11 overall and 4-8 in conference play, was below the hopes of Coach Steve Liebertz. The Rebels finished ranked eight in the 11-team Conference II.
"Our goal is always to make the playoffs," Liebertz said. He also said that the team should benefit from its experience and work toward a better record next year. Playing in the tough new conference requires, "a little more work than what we're used to," Liebertz said.
The team was sparked by the performance of its two leading scorers, seniors David Gallin and Jason Friedman, who qualified for all-conference honors.
The season's highlight was an exciting 72-54 victory over crosstown rival Great Neck North in December.
Liebertz is optimistic about the potential contributions next year from three juniors currently on the team¬Jeff Weinroth, Rich Kanefsky and Matt Rendor. Also, Liebertz expects that several additions from the current junior varsity squad will booster the team's performance next year. The junior varsity team has completed a highly successful season.
