Simone Lelchuk Diane Levine, Pam Ostrover and Dena Smith won Bronze Medals in Girls Soccer at the Maccabi Youth Games held in Cherry Hill, New Jersey from Aug. 15-20. These Great Neck South High School Varsity Soccer players were all members of the Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center Girls Soccer Team. The Sid Jacobson team consisted of 15 athletes from Long Island, Westchester and New York City. Playing seven games over four days in 90 degree heat, the girls faced teams from New Jersey, Connecticut, Chicago and California. This year, the Maccabi Games were sponsored by the Katz JCC in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Staying with host families in the area, the girls participated in a multitude of social activities as well as performed community service activities.
Coach Jack Levine was particularly happy that there were so many Great Neck athletes on the squad and that they were able to contribute so much to the team effort. "The Maccabi Youth Games are a wonderful athletic, cultural and social experience," stated Coach Levine. "The team worked hard and played extremely well against highly competitive teams - they deserved to win a medal."
Their parents, Joni and Marshall Lelchuk, Assistant Coach Arlene Levine, Leslie and Mitch Ostrover, and Wendy and Scott Smith were supportive throughout the week and happy to share in the thrilling experience.
