There were many touching and memorable moments at the Great Neck Games Special Olympics event, commencing with the Olympic Torch run led by Special Olympics athlete, Lee Wolbrom. Observing Special Olympics volunteer, Ed Fernbach, coach the Spirits before the basketball competitions began; a surprise presentation by Special Olympics athlete, Colette Gray, to Alan Someck; watching the Special Olympics athletes perform on the basketball court with pride and joy; noticing the families of the Special Olympics athletes cheering in the bleachers; listening to Coach John Grunebaum instruct the Special Olympics athletes with unfailing support and encouragement; hearing Coach Jon Folber's voice echo through the North High gym when he announced to the Special Olympics spectators that the Great Neck Spirits team placed second in the basketball competitions at the fourth annual Great Neck Games of 1999! When the band Squeaky Clean took center stage at the North High gym and the Special Olympics athletes and volunteers put on their dancing shoes and "twisted the night away." And lastly, when the song Love Can Build A Bridge was heard over the loudspeakers, 100 volunteers formed an arch for 60 Special Olympics athletes to walk through, and one by one we said goodbye to our friends.
On behalf of the Great Neck Games Special Olympics of Nassau County, we wish to thank Waldbaum's and Bagel Hut of Great Neck and Apple and Eve of Rosyln for providing lunch to the Special Olympics athletes and their families.
