The Great Neck South Girls Lacrosse team under coaches Eli Jannes Olive and Peter Gottfried defeated Floral Park 12-10 Saturday, March 27, upping their record at 3-0. Floral Park opened up the game by scoring first in the first 55 seconds of the game. South's sophomore Simone, Lelchuk scored with 16:29 left in the half to tie the score at 1. Floral Park scored twice before Lelchuk scored her 2nd goal a few minutes later followed by senior Alisa Femia scored 90 seconds later to tie the score at 3. The Rebels and the Knights played to a 4-4 half time score. The 2nd half saw Floral Park score 3 unanswered goals to forge ahead 7-4. South answered back with 5 straight goals in the 2nd half on goals by senior Melissa Baron, senior Kim Lai twice, junior Heather Stepenek, and senior Leigh Ann Cursio. The 5 goal barrage helped to put the game away. South and Floral Park each scored 3 more times for the final score. Lai finished up the game with 4 goals followed by 2 goals apiece by Lelchuk, and Stepenek. Senior Gina Garagliano made 4 saves at goal." This team is different this year". Stating coach Olive, we have a good group of athletes".

The season opened up with Bethpage March 19. The score was 13-4. The Rebels opened up with a goal that was scored in the first 40 seconds by Leigh Ann Cursio. After a Bethpage goal, the Rebels scored the next 5 goals on the way to a 11-3 score at the half. Coaches Olive and Gottfried put in the subs for the 2nd half and 3 goals were scored by each team.

Carey was next on March 25 and the Rebels were victorious by the score of 12-7. South lead 4-3 at half time. The Rebels scored 9 times in the 2nd half compared to 3 by Carey. "We played harder in the 2nd half" stated Coach Olive. Cursio, and Femina each scored a hat trick (3 goals in one game). Lai and Baron added 2 goals apiece.

South is the conference 2, league 2 with the top 7 teams in league 1 making the playoffs. In South's league, the top 2 teams make the playoffs. One team in league 3 gets 1 represented. South hopes to make the playoffs. "This team two years ago went 0-16, while last year the team went 6-8," stated coach Olive. "We have a big senior group" stated Coach Olive. Eugene Oh, Cheryal Lee, Marra Guttenplant alone with Femia, Cursio, Caragliano, Baron, and Lai. The juniors consist of Bari Zibrak, Heather Stepenak, Elyse Schneiderman, Simone Honig, Amy Fornari, Sarah Brown and Ester Hyun. Laura Sasso, Jess Dinstl and Lelchuk are sophomores and round out the team. Lee, Guttenplant and Cursio are the captains.

Up next for South is a contest against Mineola, March 29, followed by April 13 against Wheatley. The goal is to make the playoffs. Stated coach Olive. Wantagh appears to be the team to beat in league 2, and South will play them away April 17, and home on the 24.
