With the state gymnastics meet in Mahopac over, the 1998-99 gymnastics season officially ended for the Rebels. The team was especially proud of its 9-4 win-loss record, especially after realizing that this was the first year for the Rebels' in Conference I. The team also scored a record high 155.8 points at a meet against Baldwin and Farmingdale, a new school record. Another first was the team's performance at the Team County meet at North Shore High School, where the Rebels placed sixth out of the top eight teams in the county.

Six individual gymnasts, the six all-around performers in most of the team meets, won awards at the end-of-season meets. Patti Hong, who competed all-around in the Coaches Invitational Meet, placed eighth on vault and ninth on floor with a 7.45 on both events (the first 10 places are awarded at the invitational meet because of the large volume of competitors). Tracy Gertler placed third on the floor with a score of 7.85 and also placed eighth in the all-around competition.

Three were awarded all-county honorable mentions: Sarah Cardell on bars, and Beth Wecksell and Jane Kim on vault. Cardell also placed third in the individual county meet in the high school division with a score of 7.25. Wecksell won all-conference honors on floor, and third place in the county meet on floor with a score of 7.95.

Rebecca Greenwald was an all-county and all-state all-around gymnast for the '98-'99 season. Greenwald took second all-around in the county meet with a score of 35.0. Her scores on individual events and respective places are as follows: fifth on vault (8.25), third on bars (8.7), second on beam (9.2) and third on floor (8.85). As a result of these scores and her seasonal averages, Greenwald was able to participate in the State Qualifying Meet. She won third all-around with a score of 34.55, and placed third on bars with an 8.65 and third on am with an 8.95. Her all around title enabled her to then participate in the state meet on every event. She had the second highest all-around score for Nassau County (Section VIII) in the State meet, but did not place in the state competition. The Section VIII state team, with Greenwald being one of its key team members, was sixth in the state with a score of 171.925.

The team was extremely proud of its triumphant members. With a star-studded team, the Rebels hope to make another performance in the Team County meet of 2000. That meet, with all of the top gymnasts from section VIII, may possibly take place at Great Neck South High School next year. With the spirit of the team supporting every member and the hard work that takes place during every season, next season can only allow the Rebels to reap more of the rewards of hard work and dedication.
