Great Neck South girls track team under Coach Chris McKenzie competed in the Nassau County championships held at Farmingdale University Jan. 31. Senior Claudine Compas won the 300 in a time of 43.3. Compas earned all-county honors. She placed second in the 55 meter dash in 7.5, earning all-county honors in her second event. The winner ran 7.4. Compas also was part of the 4x200 relay, along with freshmen Deena Smith, Sarah Brown and Rachel Supris. The team placed third in a time of 1:57.6. South's, other scoring came from junior Danielle Brown who placed sixth in the shot put with a toss of 29 feet 8 inches. South placed sixth overall in the counties with 25 points. Southside won with 68 points edging out Garden City with 66 points. Other performances from the counties came from Supris in the hurdles. Sarah Brown ran the 300 meters, junior Lydia Rekas and sophomore Alexandra Jelcic ran the 1500 meters.
A week earlier at the division championships held at Farmingdale Jan. 23, South placed fourth with 45 points. Garden City was the winner with 113 points followed by Southside with 92 points. Compas won the 55 meter dash and the 300 meters in 7.5, and 43.7 respectively. Compas earned All Division. Sarah Brown placed sixth in the 55 meter hurdles in 11.4. Brown also ran the 300 in 47.6. Danielle Brown placed third in the shot put with a toss of 30 feet 6 inches. Brown earned all division honors. Rachel Supris placed third in the high jump in 4'2" and earned all division honors. All of South's relays scored. The 4x200 relay featuring Compas, S. Brown, Smith and Supris placed second in 1:58.8. The 4x400 relay team of senior Caroline Cheng, sophomore Shirley Koon and freshman Meryl McTiernan placed fifth in 5:35.5. The 4x800 relay team of Jelcic, Rekas, sophomore Kristy O'Neil and junior Theresa Donnelly placed fifth.
Coach Chris McKenzie was happy with the county championships, and pleased with the division championships, as the team worked hard. There are 22 athletes on the team of which most are underclassmen. Compas, Jelcic, S. Brown and junior Allison Piliero are the captains. Up next for South is the state qualifiers held at Farmingdale University Feb. 8.
