Alert's former Fire Chief Ron Poons, who was seriously burned trying to save a woman from a burning house on Nov. 15, spends his thirty-fourth day in the hospital today. At Saturday night's Alert Fire Company dinner he was awarded the Medal of Valor and the Firefighter of the Year Award.

Dr. Jack Kamins, who has been director of pupil personnel and psychological services for the Great Neck Public Schools since 1993, was presented with the Leadership in School Psychology Distinguished Service Award by the New York Association of School Psychologists (NYASP). He received this honor last month, at a luncheon at the Crown Plaza Hotel in White Plains. Some 450 school psychologists from the NY area were present. "To be recognized by such a group really makes me feel quite proud," Dr. Kamins said.

At the December public action meeting, Great Neck's board of education presented proposed plans for new athletic fields to be developed at school district owned property next to the park district's Parkwood Sports Complex. The fields, requested by parents, students, teachers and coaches to meet the growing participation on teams, will be for the North High School and the North Middle School.
