The public is so fascinated with violence and crime that the average high school graduate can name more serial killers than presidents. Violence has become the top rated TV show of all time. People watch these shows for the same reason we slow down to see a car accident, morbid curiosity. But this curiosity has reached the level of obsession.
The American people have been watching simulated violence on television for so many years that only the real thing can satisfy their craving. Each day we sit and listen to the news as they report the latest crimes. Not only does the American public like to hear about the crime, but also the punishment.
Entire television channels are devoted to criminal court cases. People tune in to watch live, as the fate of a human being is decided. Yet the public craves more, so the same people who brought you Cops have invented an entirely new field in crime TV. With surveillance cameras in virtually every store in America, technology has made it possible to not only show pictures of the crime scene, but to actually watch the crime being committed.
New television shows like World's Most Dangerous have spurted up on the national networks promising that what you are watching is not a dramatization, but the real thing.
When it comes to feeding the public's urge for violence no network will be outdone. Not only are there shows replaying crimes, but crimes gone wrong. Yet, there is finally a combination of slap stick comedy and violence in a show dedicated to criminal bloopers. At this rate, the only thing left is to televise executions.
