Samansky Heads Great Neck VOA
By Wendy K. Kreitzman

Great Neck Park District Commissioner Andrew J. Imperatore has announced that he will seek re-election. Mr. Imperatore, who currently chairs the park board, has been a commissioner since 1979. He is being challenged by Neil Leiberman.

VOA PRESIDENT, Saddle Rock Mayor J. Leonard Samansky

Saddle Rock Mayor J. Leonard Samansky now heads the Great Neck Village Officials Association. Installed at the VOA's annual dinner on Aug. 21, Mayor Samansky is dedicating his term in office to emergency preparedness plans and to strengthening the relationships among the 10 municipalities he now represents--the nine Great Neck villages and the Town of North Hempstead.

Mayor Samansky outlined his two goals: a general goal to have "greater inter-municipal cooperation" and to "serve the community as a whole;" and the "very specific goal" of implementing a "viable, final emergency management plan" that could be put into action "in the event of some unforeseen circumstance."

Mayor Samansky wants a coordinated plan for the entire Great Neck peninsula, in case an emergency situation arises on the peninsula and other, outside help, is not available. If there is an emergency limited to Great Neck, then outside help, such as help from the county and the state, is available. Of course, Great Neck must still be able to coordinate activities in such a case.

Having helped establish Nassau County's emergency management plan, Mayor Samansky is well-prepared to lead Great Neck along similar lines. Since he serves on the Nassau County Emergency Task Force, he is quite aware that, even when the county helps, Great Neck must be able to help the county and "give specialized information to those who come to our assistance."

And, says Mayor Samansky, "One of the most important factors for a plan is communication."

The Village of Saddle Rock has purchased an 800 MHZ radio from the county. Such a radio is available through the county for each fire department and for each village, though presently Saddle Rock is the only Great Neck village to own such equipment.

This month, at the first VOA meeting of his new administration, Mayor Samansky plans to appoint a small committee of mayors to create an emergency management plan for Great Neck. When completed, the plan will then be submitted to the VOA for revisions and approval.

While emphasizing that each village "can be individual," and each can "do its own thing," Mayor Samansky say the villages must recognize "that we are one community--what happens in one village affects the other villages."

Said Mayor Samansky, "We have superb elected officials who are looking to cooperate."
